INEX FILM EXPEDITION
Expedition Inex film is a squat created in March 2011 in Belgrade, Karaburma, with the intention of exploring the possibilities of self-organization, solidarity and "do-it-yourself" life philosophy. Until the end of 2015, Inex brought together individuals and organizations who needed space for work and cultural production, and who, in addition to their own knowledge and will, generally did not have other resources at their disposal.
Inex film was a social enterprise that dealt with film production and distribution and was part of the company "Inex", one of the largest foreign trade companies in the former Yugoslavia. The completely devastated former building of this cinematographic enterprise is a symbol of transition and brutal privatization of social enterprises.
THE PROJECT
In cooperation with young artists, activists and cultural workers, we started the revival of this object as a legitimate act of activation and use of common space for the needs of collective production and exchange. The door was open to anyone who wanted to work and create, or just spend their free time. Together, we made an unsightly ruin into a social and cultural center that influenced the creation of many other spaces in Serbia.
MANIFEST (taken from the site)
"Self-organized collective action to revive the Inex film building
The Inex film expedition explores the possibilities of self-organization, solidarity and the do-it-yourself philosophy of life in Belgrade at the beginning of the 21st century. It brings together individuals and organizations who need a space for work and cultural production and who, apart from their own knowledge and will, generally do not have other resources at their disposal.
The object of our conquest, the ground of clearing and the space of articulation of our needs is the Inex film building in Karaburma. This building, once the headquarters of a large company that itself was involved in cultural production, has been rapidly deteriorating for years. Our activities in it are also a call to the authorities to take more seriously the need for spaces for artistic creativity and other non-profit activities.
The revitalization of the Inex Film building takes place through actions of cleaning, arranging and painting the space, as well as through the joint organization of various cultural and other events. Each interested group or individual proposes and realizes contents that become part of the collective effort to rearrange this space and make it capable of creativity and exchange of ideas and knowledge. Anyone is free to join!
In the previous period, we organized three clean-up actions and two highly attended events with film screenings, talks, workshops, but also a DJ program, which is only a (good) start to the sustainability of this space. A large number of individuals and organizations that joined the expedition gives us the strength to continue our activities.
But despite all this, we are aware that the real fight is yet to come!"
